What is a Traineeship?

A Traineeship is an education and training programme with work experience that is focused on giving you the skills and experience that employers are looking for. At its core are work preparation training, english and maths for those who need it, and a high quality work experience placement.

We work in partnership with Sunderland AFC, Durham County Cricket Club and Durham Furniture to deliver the Leading Edge Traineeship Programme.

Will I get a job at the end?

It isn’t guaranteed but that is what we are aiming for! You will have the opportunity to apply for Apprenticeships or other employment in an area of your preference. The skills you will gain as part of work preparation and careers will prepare you for application and interview processes.

How long does it last?

A Leading Edge Traineeship is 6 to 10 weeks, this can be flexible based on your current circumstances, for example if you have a part-time job (under 16 hours).

How old do I have to be to apply for a traineeship?

To be eligible for a Leading Edge Traineeship you must be aged between 16-24.

Do I get paid?

No, but you will gain job experience, nationally recognised qualifications and training which can lead to a paid Apprenticeship or sustained employment.

Does it cost anything?

The Leading Edge Traineeship Scheme is funded by the government so there are no costs involved. Travel and childcare will be reimbursed if applicable.

What happens if I secure a job or interview before I have completed the programme?

Great! We can support you through the interview process and ensure you are fully prepared. If you have secured desired employment – Well Done!

What is the difference between a Traineeship and an Apprenticeship?

A Traineeship may lead to an Apprenticeship and aims to provide skills training that will enable you to successfully apply for Apprenticeships or relevant employment. An Apprenticeship is paid and involves a contract of employment, whereas a Traineeship is unpaid and does not involve a contract of employment.

Can I choose a specific area to work in or do I have to work in all?

With a Leading Edge Traineeship you can gain experience in the following areas: Business Administration, Events, Marketing, Hospitality, Maintenance & Facilities, Grounds Keeping, Stewarding and Education Support, Reception, Customer Service, Warehousing, Drivers Assistant, Furniture Restoration, Retail etc

We can be flexible around your interests, you do not have to cover all of the above areas during your placement.

Can I do a traineeship if I am currently in receipt of benefits?

Yes you can, speak with your Job Centre Plus Advisor, Job Coach or get in touch with us.
